Monitoring Solar Panel Performance With Custom Software

Gilead Sciences Power Monitoring System
The Challenge

Located in the heart of the IDA business park, Carrigtwohill, the plant is one the main manufacturing and distribution hubs for Gilead’s European operations. They came to us looking for a way in which to track energy usage across the site, specifically water, gas, electrical, and steam usage. The idea was to become more efficient with their energy, see where possible savings could be made, or where excess energy is being lost.

The Solution

A network of high-end metering devices was set up around the site to monitor and analyse energy usage. This was then integrated into Power Monitoring Expert PME our highly intelligent power monitoring system. Once stored in the database there are a number of tools available to the end user for analysing the data, including; live and historical data trending, automated energy usage and trending reports, and power quality event notifications.

ESB Distributed Generation - DS3 Monitoring & Reporting
The Challenge

EirGrid required detailed reporting in a number of predefined network scenarios. Generators must meet very specific performance criteria when responding to network events. These events such as Fast Frequency Response (FFR), Fast Post Fault Active Power Recover (FPFAPR) and Reserve Response events such as Primary Operating Response (POR) require accurate and high speed recording and reporting of data.

The Solution

ESB Generation and Trading can now demonstrate their compliance to EirGrid’s DS3 services on a site by site basis. We provided a central power monitoring system that allows logging of power quality events along with generation of reports and track events, giving overall better visibility and transparency of their asset behaviour.

Utility Monitoring and Power Quality
The Challenge

Originally we were contacted because the client used highly sensitive equipment in its manufacturing processes resulting in a necessity to monitor all aspects of power quality. These included, monitoring harmonic distortion, power factor sags and swells, transient disturbances and energy efficiency.
Down the line the site expanded resulting in much greater capacity with compliance and regulatory requirements increased. We were contacted again to monitor all utility information and this brought water, air, gas and steam into the project as well as electricity.

The Solution

This highly dynamic site now meets its efficiency targets while the electrical and utility systems operate at a level of ‘power needs’ only. Through the collection and continuous monitoring of data, power wastage is reduced and inefficiencies identified early. The client is also provided with a deep level of analytical information which is extremely useful in future site planning and development.

DS3 Monitoring & Reporting with a BESS
The Challenge

As their trusted electrical engineering consultants, this client approached us wanting to introduce a Battery Energy Storage System ( BESS) into their network to store the energy being produced by their renewable power sources (solar or wind), so that they could then either use this power onsite themselves or export it back to the grid. Doing so posed implications with harmonics as well as a requirement to comply with DS3 System Services.

The Solution

The client could prove to EirGrid their compliance with DS3, while also giving them a complete overview of how their BESS is functioning. They now have an efficient system that they can clearly see the effectiveness of and prove the return in their investment. They can also determine how best to allocate the energy stored in the BESS so their site never suffers from downtime or failed equipment.
