POWER SYSTEM MODELLING STUDIES

Our team of experienced electrical and power system engineers use ETAP and SKM modelling software to construct a digital twin replica of your electrical network in order to optimise the design, simulation, monitoring, control, and automation of your power system. Depending on the outcomes or information you require we can conduct any number of the specialised studies we offer.

HARMONIC FILTERS

Premium Power is the official solution provider and distributor of Schaffner power quality products for Ireland and the UK. Our expertise lies in the power quality field and mitigation of harmonics. We offer a range of products from their Ecosine Active Filter range, Passive Filter range, and Reactor range. The the main purpose of all products is to mitigate harmonics, however, each takes a different approach, so our team is on hand to provide expert advice and help you choose the best solution for your needs. Offering a complete service, we can commission the equipment supplied and perform suitable PQ studies to validate performance of the equipment.

POWER MONITORING SYSTEMS

Large scale facilities have come around to the benefits of incorporating power monitoring systems as part of their process control as well as the standard building management systems. We can work with you to get the best from your power monitoring system, commissioning and verifying the energy and power systems for compliance with EN 16247-1 for energy audits.

Premium Power are one of few companies to achieve the coveted EcoXpert Master Partner status from Schneider Electric for our Critical Power systems and solutions. Receiving this certification demonstrates our expertise in designing and deploying of energy management systems, implementing advanced metering networks, power quality management and world-class software tools to assist large and critical sites manage energy costs, improve the reliability of their electrical systems and optimise equipment performance.

LOAD FLOW & SHORT CIRCUIT

The configuration of the electrical distribution system changes over time to meet the needs of the various generation, manufacturing and operating processes. The alteration of an electrical distribution system configuration results in the operating characteristics and specification of the network changing.
For new and expanding facilities it is necessary to determine the predicted electrical load growth rate and investigate suitable connection points for future loads. Identifying suitable locations in the electrical network can be utilised for connection of electrical loads, identifying weak points, spare capacity and prediction of energy loss. This will allow the creation of a technically feasible strategy for the successful expansion of the network.

Protection & Safety at PepsiCo
The Challenge

PepsiCo sought to make their production plant at Little Island, Co. Cork a centre of excellence, where industry best practices were exercised to be used as a benchmark for their other locations. We were commissioned to carry out a review of the electrical distribution network on site for reliability and safety and to address any issues found.

The Solution

Following an in-depth on-site survey, we built a detailed representation software model of PepsiCo’s electrical distribution network in order to carry out a number of specialised studies. An overall electrical safety study and analysis delivered many benefits for the company in meeting its desired ‘best in class’ standards and ensured employees that they are working in a safe environment, equipped with the knowledge to deal with safety hazards and dangers such as arc flash incidents.

Glanbia - Harmonic Mitigation
The Challenge

Due to the high quantity of variable speed drives installed across the network for energy efficiency purposes, an elevated level of harmonic currents and voltage was being constantly recorded throughout the plant. It was identified very early that those abnormal harmonic levels will have a negative impact on the performance of the facility. A full evaluation was required to ensure that the electrical distribution network will function as required and could reliably support the new milk processing production equipment.

The Solution

We supplied and commissioned multiple active harmonic filters based on our analytical results. Total harmonic voltage distortion fell from 6.5% to 3.5%, maintaining it within the IEC 61000-2-4 limits, preventing future failures of critical devices, such as PLCs and controls, reducing the energy losses due to excessive currents, and extending the lifespan of mission-critical power equipment.

Hybrid Solution for Harmonics Issue at Dairy Processing Plant
The Challenge

This newly commissioned facility built on a green field site was experiencing some reliability issues and unplanned outages at various locations across the electrical network. The energy efficient design had a high quantity of variable speed drives installed and the client was aware that an elevated level of harmonic currents and voltage was being constantly recorded throughout the plant.

The Solution

A hybrid solution, composed of Active Harmonic Filters (AHF) and Passive Harmonic Filters (PHF) was recommended for a number of locations. A staged mitigation plan for filter installation matching ramp-up of production allowed specific solutions to exactly match the issues at each location. This way a greater reduction in Voltage THD was achieved, preventing future failures of critical devices, reducing the energy losses due to excessive currents, and extending the lifespan of mission-critical power equipment.

Grid Connection Study for Battery Energy Storage System
The Challenge

This plant holds such a critical role for the wider PepsiCo group it is important that all the processes onsite have access to a pristine and reliable power supply. Due to the large amount of non-linear loads installed in modern facilities nowadays power quality can often be compromised. The client wanted to ensure that power within the plant was of the required quality to effectively run their high value processes.

The Solution

We carried out an extensive power reliability study over a week period with specialised portable monitoring equipment. The results were analysed to check against all elements of power quality phenomena such as sags/swells, transients, flicker, interruptions, etc. Harmonic levels were also compared against the industry standard IEC 61000-2-4 for compliance. A comprehensive report was issued to the client displaying all the relevant information from the monitoring period and recommendations for future action.
