Power Systems Consultant

Project Description

Following an in-depth on-site survey, we built a detailed representation software model of PepsiCo’s electrical distribution network at Little Island. Power system analysis identified significant problems:

  • Potentially high arc flash incident energy levels at locations where live works were being conducted
  • Miscoordination of protection devices
  • Various recommendations were made to update settings on the electrical protection system to optimise protection together with reducing the incident energy release from potential arc flash incidents.
  • This process was repeated for two other PepsiCo locations.
  • The client also increased the scope of the project to include electrical safety training for their staff.
Project Challenges

PepsiCo sought to make their production plant at Little Island, Co. Cork a centre of excellence, where industry best practices were exercised to be used as a benchmark for their other locations. We were commissioned to carry out a review of the electrical distribution network on site for reliability and safety and to address any issues found.

Project Outcomes

An overall electrical safety study and analysis delivered many benefits for the company in meeting its desired ‘best in class’ standards, and ensured employees that they are working in a safe environment, equipped with the knowledge to deal with safety hazards dangers such as arc flash incidents.

PepsiCo saw overall improved electrical safety and enhanced reliability of their process.

A further bi-product of our information gathering has furnished the company with a complete model of their entire electrical distribution network which will be of continued value for Electrical Asset Maintenance Planning and an aid for design of system changes, upgrades or expansions.
